Fix the Error Occurred While Updating Steam
This guide offers solutions to fix Steam update errors and ensure uninterrupted gaming.
1. Update Drivers
Outdated or corrupted drivers may cause errors during Steam updates, disrupting normal functionality. Checking and updating your device drivers can effectively resolve this issue. We recommend using Driver Sentry for automatic driver detection and updates. This tool saves time and avoids the risks of downloading or installing incorrect drivers.
Get the latest version, install the software, and open it. Click "Scan".
After scanning, find the drivers that need updates and click "Upgrade".
After updating, restart your computer to ensure the new drivers are fully functional.
2. Check Your Network Connection
Check if the network is working properly by trying to open any website in your browser.
If you're using Wi-Fi, it's recommended to switch to a wired connection for better stability.
Turn off the router, wait for a few minutes, and then restart it.
In some regions, access to Steam may be restricted, so try using a reliable VPN tool to connect to servers in other regions.
3. Run Steam as Administrator
Right-click the Steam shortcut or executable file and select "Properties".
In the window, check the box for "Run this program as an administrator".
Click "Apply" and "OK" to save the changes.
Restart Steam and check if the update error persists.
4. Clear Steam Download Cache
Open the Steam client and click on the "Steam" menu in the top-left corner.
Select "Settings", then click on the "Downloads" option on the left.
Click the "Clear Download Cache" button, follow the prompts, and log back into Steam.
When the confirmation window appears, click the "OK" button to proceed.
Try updating the client again.
5. Edit the Hosts.txt File
Search for Notepad in the Start menu, then run it as an administrator.
Click "File" in the top-left corner and choose Open.
Navigate to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" and select the "hosts.txt" file.
Add the following lines at the bottom of the file:
142.122.70 cdn.steampowered.com
111.128.6 cdn.store.steampowered.com
111.128.7 media.steampowered.com
Save the file and close Notepad.
Flush DNS Cache:
Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
Type "ipconfig /flushdns" and click "OK" to refresh the DNS cache.
6. Temporarily Disable Antivirus and Firewall
Disable Antivirus Software:
Open your antivirus program and temporarily turn off "real-time protection" or similar options.
Disable Windows Firewall:
Press Win + R, type "control", and press Enter.
Go to "System and Security" > "Windows Defender Firewall".
Click "Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off" and select "Turn off Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended)".
After disabling, try updating Steam again.
Once the update is complete, re-enable your antivirus and firewall to ensure system security.
7. Reinstall Steam Client
Navigate to the Steam installation directory (default: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam).
Copy the steamapps folder to a secure location to preserve your installed game data.
Open "Control Panel" > "Programs and Features", locate "Steam", and uninstall it.
Visit the Steam official website and download the latest client version.
After installation, move the steamapps folder back to the installation directory to restore your games.
By following these steps, you can effectively resolve errors encountered when updating Steam. If the issue persists, consider contacting Steam Support for further assistance.
