In a modern office, scanners are essential, but users may sometimes face issues with them not working. This article provides effective methods to quickly resolve this problem and restore scanner functionality.

Fix 1: Check Hardware Connections

Check the USB cable for damage and ensure it's securely connected to both the computer and the scanner. For wireless scanners, confirm they are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Make sure the scanner's power plug is inserted and turned on. Check the scanner's indicator light to confirm it is functioning properly.

Try connecting the scanner to different USB ports on the computer to rule out port issues.

Fix 2: Update Drivers

Outdated or corrupted drivers are common causes of scanner malfunctions. Timely driver updates can ensure smooth operation and enhance efficiency. It is recommended to use Driver Sentry to automatically check for driver updates, saving time and avoiding the risk of downloading incorrect drivers.

Download

Click the download button to get the latest version of Driver Sentry, install it, and open the software, then click "Scan".

After scanning, it will display which drivers are missing or need updates. Locate the scanner driver in the results list and click the "Upgrade" button.

After the update, it is advisable to restart the computer to ensure the updated drivers function properly.

Fix 3: Restart Devices

Turn off the scanner, wait a few minutes, and then turn it back on to see if it works.

Completely shut down the computer, wait a few minutes, then power it back on to ensure the system can recognize the scanner again.

Fix 4: Configure Related Services

If certain related services are not running, the scanner may not function correctly. Ensure the following services are running:

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

  • DCOM Server Process Launcher

  • RPC Endpoint Mapper

  • Shell Hardware Detection

  • Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)

To check the status of these services, follow these steps using "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" as an example:

Press Win + R, type "services.msc", and press Enter to open the Services Manager.

Locate the "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service and ensure its status is "Running".

Right-click on "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service, select "Properties", and set the Startup Type to "Automatic". Click "Apply" and confirm.

Fix 5: Use the System Troubleshooter

Press Win + S, type "cmd".

In the search results, right-click "Command Prompt" and select "Run as administrator".

Type the following command and press Enter: msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic

This command will open the "Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter" window.

Click "Next" to start the detection process, and the system will automatically scan for device issues.

If any issues are detected, options for repair will be displayed; select "Apply this fix" to proceed.

Fix 6: Try Different Scanning Software

If you are using specific scanning software, ensure it is updated to the latest version.

Download and install alternative scanning software to test if the scanner functions properly with different programs.

Fix 7: Run System File Checker

In the search box, type "cmd", right-click "Command Prompt", and select "Run as administrator".

Type the following command and press Enter: sfc /scannow

This command will scan and repair corrupted system files. Restart the computer after completion.

Fix 8: Check Firewall and Antivirus Software

Click the Start menu, select "Settings", then "Update & Security".

Click "Windows Security", go to "Firewall & Network Protection", and temporarily disable the firewall to test if the scanner works.

Open your antivirus software and check its settings for any options that might block the scanner's operation or access.

If found, try adding the scanner to the whitelist or temporarily disabling the antivirus for testing.
