When the number keys stop working on your computer, it can affect your efficiency and may indicate software or hardware issues. This article offers effective solutions to quickly fix the problem and restore functionality.

1. Update Keyboard Drivers

If the keyboard drivers are faulty, it may cause certain keys to stop working. Updating the keyboard drivers often solves this issue. We recommend using Driver Sentry for automatic driver updates, which saves time and prevents the risk of downloading or installing the wrong drivers.

Download

Click the download button to get the latest version of Driver Sentry, install the software, and open it. Click "Scan".

After scanning, it will show which drivers are missing or need updating. In the results list, find the keyboard driver and click the "Upgrade" button.

Once updated, it's recommended to restart your computer to ensure the updated drivers work correctly.

2. Check Keyboard Connection

If you're using a wired keyboard, ensure the USB connection is secure and not loose. If possible, try plugging the keyboard into a different USB port.

For wireless keyboards, make sure the receiver is properly inserted into the USB port without interference. If you're using a Bluetooth keyboard, ensure the Bluetooth connection is stable.

3. Restart the Computer

Make sure to save any ongoing work to avoid losing data.

Click the "Start" menu and select the "Power" icon.

Click the "Restart" option, and the system will automatically close all programs and reboot.

After restarting, check if the number keys work. If the issue was caused by temporary software conflicts or memory problems, restarting usually resolves it.

4. Check if Num Lock is Enabled

Find the "Num Lock" key (usually located at the top left of the numeric keypad) and press it to check if the indicator light turns on.

If the light doesn't turn on, press the "Num Lock" key again to enable it. Then, try pressing the number keys on the numeric keypad to see if they work.

5. Clean the Keyboard

Ensure your computer is turned off and the keyboard is unplugged.

Use compressed air to blow away any dust from the keyboard surface and between the keys, or gently wipe the keyboard with a damp cloth.

After cleaning, reconnect the keyboard and check if the number keys work.

6. Disable Sticky Keys and Filter Keys

Press the "Windows + I" keys to open "Settings".

In the settings menu, go to "Ease of Access" > "Keyboard".

Ensure that "Use Sticky Keys" and "Use Filter Keys" are both disabled. If they are enabled, turn them off and test if the number keys work.

7. Check for Hardware Issues

  • Connect your keyboard to another computer and check if the number keys still don't work. If the issue occurs on another computer as well, the problem may be with the keyboard hardware.

  • If the numeric keypad doesn't work, try using the number row at the top of the keyboard. If those keys work, the issue may be with the numeric keypad hardware.

  • If your keyboard is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer for repairs or replacement.
